Accountability is not a dirty word. For many it may feel like an introduction to a disguised form of harshness or condemnation, but that is far from the truth if we live and operate with a baseline of love. Love conquers all barriers.
Think about it like this. No one likes condemnation. In fact, we have learned to despise condemnation and we have equated condemnation with judgment and that is not cool. The Bible tells us in Romans 8:1 that condemnation is not God’s desired response and that we are assured by God that, “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God loves us and tells us so in His Word and through His presence and promises.
So why is accountability important? Because accountability is how God loves us. God accepts us just as we are but God loves us way too much to leave us there and God begins his loving work of transformation within us to shape us into His image. The restoration of the imago dei in each of us through Christ requires living in accountability and that is why we call that relationship a covenant. In a culture that cries out love is acceptance please understand that God loves us unconditionally, accepts us right where we are, but has no intention of accepting our continued sinful and selfish behavior. That’s accountability, and that’s real love!
