So how can we know for sure that we are really living as disciples of Jesus Christ? Well Jesus seemed to know that His original 12 and we would need some clarity around that endeavor as He spoke in John 8:31, “So Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word [continually obeying My teachings and living in accordance with them, then] you are truly My disciples.” (AMP)
Enlightening, eh? I guess the temptation to think that knowing God’s Word and having a desire to live for God are good and noble desires, but the ingredient that makes the intent complete is the behavior of obedience.
That’s tough for us all, but especially in a culture that is naturally bent towards avoiding accountability. However, when we realize that God does not intend for us to try to muster obedience on our own, but rather is gracious to give us the Holy Spirit as our Guide and Comforter, then we see there is a way. God’s way of accountability, application, and intentionality. Be encouraged that God will lead with His spirit if we will give God a chance to help us do what we could never do on our own!
