Several years back there was a popular bumper sticker that I would see often on the cars of those living in the golden years. It read simply, “I am out spending my children’s inheritance.”
It struck me as humorous but now that I am getting closer to the golden years I more soberly consider the opportunity before me. A physical and monetary inheritance left by those who have gone before us is a lovely thing. But how much more lovely is the inheritance that we receive from God in Christ?
“3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. (I Peter 1:3-4 NIV)
The magnitude of God’s great gift to us in Jesus Christ is an inheritance that God desires for us to live in the benefit of both today and forever. Think of the elements of this eternal promise God has gifted us: a new birth, a living hope, a resurrected life, and benefits and provisions that can never perish, spoil, or fade. As much as I love my children I could never leave them anything close to that kind of blessing! Join me today in thanking God for such a gift in Jesus and join me in living in the benefit of that today. There is no rational reason to delay another day in living as a child of God and a co-heir with Christ!
