Transitions come regardless of our preparedness and boy do we share many of these in common! Some are age/stage related like retirement, school grades, graduation, career advancement, etc. And some are more life circumstances like sickness, death, divorce, marriage pregnancy, and the birth of a child. We can either plan for, learn from, and manage these transitions or they can manage us!
I really cherish the biblical mandate of training and instruction because I think there is great opportunity in those disciplines to also teach and prepare people for transitions. The natural response is to think what we need as these transitions occur, but another real challenge is what others need from us during their transitions.
Bottom line, everyone needs someone to come alongside for encouragement, accountability, and objectivity. To come alongside another who is in transition is one of the great gifts of life. That is precisely what God has offered us in the resurrected Jesus.
By receiving God’s gift by faith in Christ, we invite the Holy Spirit to come alongside and lead us, guide us, and comfort us as we make the transitions of life including the big one (not death, God destroyed that enemy through the resurrection), being transformed into the image of God. The restored imago Dei is God’s great work in us that God promises to carry on to completion if we will follow Christ and be His disciples.
What a joy and an opportunity is before us! Don’t be defeated by tough transitions, know that God and others will come alongside if you will only ask!
