I have a friend who shared this week over coffee his very real struggle. He said, “I am living in the tension of trying to be a guy who is being transformed into the image of God while being held prisoner to the culture.” Wow! I wonder how many of us can empathize with that well-stated feeling in the numerous arenas of life and work in which we find ourselves.
The more I discover about New Testament Christianity the more similarities I find between the tensions that they lived in 2000 years ago and the issues we struggle with in our present day. It is intimidating in some circles to even confess to believing that there is moral and ethical truth, and it is owned and articulated by God in His Word. To do so might draw some very pointed responses of disagreement, but probably more rolling of the eyes.
But remember we are living proof of the transforming power of God through the Holy Spirit always shaping us more into the likeness of Christ as we choose to let the truth of God transform us and restore within us the imago dei. Paul faced intimidation, imprisonment, violence, betrayal, and much more in virtually every place he travelled, yet his gospel message of truth never changed:
Romans 12:2, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
We live a life of two choices: Either Conform or Be Transformed. The pressure to conform and compromise will always be before us in this fallen world. Just remember that God has give you what you need in Jesus Christ to stand and not be intimidated to bear witness to the truth that God has so lovingly shared with us. We were created to worship God in spirit and in truth and to be the living witnesses of God’s salvation in love as disciples of Jesus Christ. Do not grow weary in living out this call for this is God’s will for you in Jesus Christ!
