Greetings and peace in the name of Jesus Christ! Just wanted to give you an update on the work of the General Conference of the United Methodist Church. God is leading us forward in a faithful way with new relevance as we remain faithful to the authority of scripture.
Among the highlights:
Mount Pisgah has been well represented out here by Bob and Glenda Fincher who have served both in a delegate’s role and in a hospitality role to the global church delegates in so many ways, and by Dan Blevins who is here representing our mission partner Water@ Work.
The University Senate and Judicial Council elections were carried by the conservative evangelical delegates who will be a great asset in church matters of law and doctrine preserving scriptural authority and bringing fresh emphasis on making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
The church continues to hold an orthodox position on marriage believing that marriage is a holy covenant between one man and one woman with God instituted by Jesus Christ. We recognize that the practice of sexuality outside of that biblically defined covenant is incompatible with Christian teaching. We continue to commit to be in ministry to and with all people including those who may not agree with any part of our belief and practice.
The General Conference and the Council of Bishops have agreed to be in covenant to worked together to bring a creative solution to stay faithful to the Bible, keep our book of Discipline, and be sensitive to the changing cultural norms around sexuality.
Deacons can now request authority from the Bishop to lead the sacramental rites of the church of baptism and holy communion in the local church.
The church continues to pursue with vigor important justice and mercy issues including human trafficking, stamping out killer diseases like Malaria and AIDS, environmental stewardship, and the sanctity of human life.
I am proud to be a part of the UMC which grew by 1.2 million members in our global community over the past 4 years. Christ has called us to go and make disciples and Christ is bringing the world to us as well. What an opportune time to do something great for God at Mount Pisgah and throughout the world! May God be praised!
