I am probably disclosing more about my age than anyone wants to know, but I remember a song from years back whose lyrics went something like this, “What the world needs now is love sweet love.” Timely eh? The song came out when I was a mere lad, but I can remember the protests of the day were around the Vietnam War, Free Love, and the Peace Movement. I think it was kind of a late 60’s thing.
As I witnessed the heartbreak unfolding over the past many months of so many hurting people around the world, I am convinced our prayers, hands, feet, and help is the love of God that they need at this time. In my own community, there are children living in poverty and fosters in need of a loving family, war veterans who are stricken with PTSD, marriages that are dissolving with much collateral damage, and adults who have no clue that the resources God has blessed them with could be shared to save thousands of precious lives both locally and globally. Dionne Warwick reminded us of what the world needs now. It was true back then and still true today.
God is love is what the Bible says. Love conquers all things, love covers a multitude of sins, and the greatest of all is love. When love is given and received there is respect involved. No harm is ever intended in love even when it is extended in accountability. Love is the balm that soothes every hurt and heals every heart. Love is the only expression big enough when calamity comes and claims lives and property in an earthquake or other disasters. Words just don’t get it done, but love expressed in real help and hope is what God uses to sustain and restore life.
Would you join me as you read this and just take a few moments to pray for those in your own network who are hurting and in need? We trust that as we invest in others in real and loving ways that love comes back to us, but even if it doesn’t, how good and right it is to extend love to those who need it the most!
