I began with the traditional Easter greeting, “Hallelujah Christ is Risen”, and the congregation eagerly responded, “Christ is Risen Indeed!” There was a moment after they responded, a pregnant pause that was seized upon by a 4-year-old little boy who had been literally drug up to the front row of that worship service to sit by his mother with the hopes that being in proximity of me and in fear of her would ensure his good behavior. But it didn’t. He blurted out with enthusiasm, “Well, where did He go?”…
Now almost 25 years later, I realize the brilliance of that question. The theologian and experienced church person would respond in short order that anyone who knows anything about the Christian faith or the creedal nature of our doctrine would know that Christ arose and ascended into Heaven to sit , live and reign with His/our Father God. True, but the Ascension didn’t occur until 40 days after the resurrection, so let the little child leads us in considering the question, “Where did this risen Jesus go, what did He do, and why?” Wow! What a powerful set of questions to consider and I would ask you to make it your business to consider this in your own spiritual life. Why? Because if we read carefully the Gospel accounts of this post resurrection time, we see Jesus in Matthew 28 and in John 20 & 21 unpack some critical pieces of the puzzle for the original 11 Disciples and for all of us who dare proclaim to be followers of Jesus.
Let me encourage you to pursue with passion in uncovering the three treasures that Jesus gave to us in these days: 1) Don’t be Afraid, 2) Receive the Holy Spirit, and 3) Live out the Great Commission. If we will allow God to lead us, Easter can be far more than just a message of HE IS RISEN; Easter for us can be a Spirit-led journey where our message is lived out by God’s mission. This is what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Questions? Please ask your pastor to teach, preach, and/or explain these dynamics in worship in the weeks ahead and ask them to include examples of how they have lived and experienced this call from God. It’ll be rich I am sure and you will be inspired by real people who have answered God’s call in real ways to live out the Great Commission. Where did Jesus go? He came back for you and me and our heart is now His home and our agenda is the very will of God. Hallelujah, Christ is Risen!
